More Details

Do you know the story of Persephone?
In Greek mythology, Persephone, the daughter of Demeter (goddess of agriculture), was abducted by Pluto and taken to Hades, the underworld. Demeter's anger left the earth barren...no crops grew, no plants blossomed.

To restore the earth's life, Zeus ordered Pluto to return Persephone to the upper world. Pluto agreed, but before releasing Persephone he made her eat a pomegranate seed. This bound her to the underworld for four months of the year, while spending the other eight months with her mother in the upper world.

This myth explains the cycle of the seasons, with Perspehone's time in the underworld symbolising winter and her return to earth representing spring's renewal.
