Hand stitched embroidery inspired by the story of 'Arachne' from Greek mythology. This piece features a cloaked girl with flowing red hair, kneeling before a spider web, into which has been stitched a chandelier.

The embroidery is hand-stitched using threads colours of black, metallic gold and a mixture of reds. The simple use of these colours is stunning. The hair has been stitched in such a way that the long strands flow freely from the embroidery fabric. The fabric used is raw linen - a lovely oatmeal colour.

The embroidery was hand stitched in a hoop but has been stitched and mounted onto board and framed, in a deep box frame without glass.

More Details

The title of this embroidery is ‘Arachne’. It is a fascinating story...here is a very quick version!

Arachne, a princess of ancient Greece, was very skilled at weaving & embroidery. The goddess Athena, goddess of crafts, civilization, and cleverness, was also a skilled weaver. Arachne challenged Athena to a weaving competition. When Athena saw how good Arachne was, she was angered by Arachne’s skill and tore up Arachne’s design. Humiliated and terrified, Arachne tried to end it all. Instead, Athena turned Arachne her into a spider, the rope became her web, and Arachne was forever spinning her web.

I hope you like my interpretation of the story. I'm really pleased with how Arachne's hair turned out. The colour really stands out!
